LaMaria is on the edge of the Parque Nacional Volcán Nevado de Colima which straddles the states of Colima and Jalisco. The Parque has two volcanos, the inactive Volcán Nevado de Colima and the very active Volcán de Fuego (both seen here.) Fuego is Mexico's most active volcano with a major eruption approximately every 70 years. In June, 2005, a huge explosion sent ash 3 miles into the sky.

LaMaria was a short 6 miles (crow distance) from the center of Volcán de Fuego.
