From Kake our route took us north in Chatham Strait and into the Peril Strait between Chichagof and Baranof Islands.

At the end of Peril Strait the Matanuska stopped and did a 360° circle in narrow waters, leading us to wonder.....? Then we realized she was waiting for the ferry Columbia (shown here) to exit from the north end of the Sergius and Kakul Narrows. The ferry route takes a 30-mile shortcut to Sitka through a very narrow, zigzag channel only 300' wide. The tide rushes through at up to 10 mph. Passage through these narrows is timed on “slack” to avoid the worst of the current. More navigation challenges for ferry crew.
