        The Alaska ferry system is remarkable. The boats run all year and in all weathers. This photo of the Matanuska was hanging on the wall outside her cafeteria: it shows the kind of pounding these ferry boats are built to handle. Winter storms combined with complex navigation on the Alaska Marine Highway place heavy demands on captains and crew. We salute them.
