Common Black Hawk
A fairly rare visitor to the southern US, this buteo hunts amphibians from perches along streams. In general it's sluggish, spending its time on concealed perches from which it drops on its prey. It rarely soars except in the breeding season

Rio San Cristobal, San Blas, Mexico. (2/07)
