American Avocets
These striking birds feed by sweeping their bills side-to-side through mud or water. The brown neck indicates a breeding male. Avocets are threatened by loss of habitat, and in dry areas by the concrentation of heavy metals which can cause horrifying deformities in chicks.

Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico . (2/07)
