Night Heron
This is a young black-crowned night heron. The plumage is quite different from the adults. Like most birds, it's napping with its bill tucked in (do they feel cold on their bills?) and one eye on alert. And, like many birds, it does this on one leg with the other one snugged up to keep warm. How about that for balance!

This photo was taken underneath the dock beside a fishing boat at Morro Bay, CA. (11/07)
